Vol. 343 No. 6

Written Answers. - Avoca Mine Danger.

658.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he is aware of the dangerous condition in which Avoca Mine, County Wicklow, has been left and particularly that a number of shafts and pits have been left open, which represent a danger to children; who is responsible for safety precautions at the mine; and the measures which will be taken to ensure that the shafts and pits are properly fenced in.

I am aware that it is necessary to seal off or fence mineshafts and pits at Avoca Mine. It has not been feasible to have this work completed to date as the receiver, who is responsible for the safety precautions at the mine, has had to arrange for salvage of equipment from the mine in the first instance and to organise the work of rendering the mine area safe which would then follow on.

The receiver is in regular contact with the Department of Labour regarding discharge of his responsibilities under the Mines and Quarries Act, 1965 and also with Wicklow County Council. So far both authorities appear to be satisfied with the progress being made by the receiver.

A round-the-clock security system is being operated by the receiver who has retained a number of experienced mining personnel for this purpose.
