asked the Minister for Finance if he will state regarding the proposed decentralisation of a section of the Department of Justice to Killarney, County Kerry (a) the date of the decision to decentralise; (b) the date on which land was purchased; (c) the number of employees involved in the transfer; (d) the date fixed for receipt of tenders; (e) the estimated cost of the provision of offices and (f) the actual saving in one year by not proceeding with the Killarney project.

(a) The then Government announced on 22 October 1980 the decision to decentralise certain sections of Government Departments to 12 provincial centres, including Killarney.

(b) The site for the Killarney project was transferred to the Commissioners of Public Works on 28 October 1981.

(c) Approximately 160 staff were to be transferred from Dublin.

(d) The date fixed for receipt of tenders was 29 July 1982.

(e) Cost of the provision of the offices was estimated at £1.30 million.

(f) The estimated saving in 1983 in not proceeding with the project is £0.50 million.
