asked the Minister for Health his Department's plans for carrying out major improvements to Edenderry hospital in County Offaly in conjunction with the Midland Health Board; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The carrying out of improvements at Edenderry District Hospital is a matter for the Midland Health Board in the first instance. As part of its capital development programme, the board propose to replace the District Hospital, Edenderry. This proposal is at preliminary discussion stage at present. In the meanwhile the Midland Health Board, in consultation with the Chief Fire Officer of Offaly County Council, have completed a considerable amount of improvements at Edenderry District Hospital to ensure the highest level of safety in the hospital having regard to its age.
