Vol. 344 No. 5

Written Answer. - County Limerick Land.

647.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that a company (details supplied) has on a number of occasions tried to sell approximately 250 acres of land which they own at Treen, Newtown, Clarina, County Limerick; that they were unsuccessful in doing so; that at the present these lands are only partially rented; if he is aware that there are many smallholders in the area who would benefit considerably from this estate if it were acquired and subdivided by the Land Commission; and if he will consider doing this.

The Land Commission have no proposals for the acquisition of these lands. Due to budgetary constraints the direct acquisition of land by the Land Commission has had to be curtailed. Instead local smallholders are being encouraged to join as a group to buy land coming on the market. The Land Commission will give all the help and advice required to such a group in relation to mapping, subdivision and subsequent rearrangement.

If the local smallholders in this case are interested in buying for themselves, they should contact the Land Commission office at St. Munchin's House, Dock Road, Limerick.

648.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the situation in regard to the acquisition by the Land Commission of an estate (details supplied) in County Limerick.
