Vol. 344 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

1019.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the reason students from Killeagh, County Cork who attend secondary schools in Midleton, County Cork, were not allowed to board the school bus at the boundary of the catchment area, which would have meant a saving of 30p per day per student; (b) if it is intended to operate the same school transport system from Killeagh to Midleton in the coming term; and (c) the reason the school bus did not operate from Killeagh to Midleton during the examination period.

Post-Primary pupils from Killeagh who avail of transport on the scheduled service to Midleton centre may board the bus at any point along the route and my information is that they have not been prevented from doing so.

The scheduled service from Killeagh to Midleton operated during the examination period and the vehicles in question had sufficient accommodation for all children who were sitting for the examinations.

The scheduled services from Youghal via Killeagh to Midleton may continue to be used to facilitate eligible pupils who apply for transport to Midleton centre.

Scheduled services as distinct from special school services, are operated by CIE and are the responsibility of the company and my Department have no function in their operation.
