Vol. 344 No. 7

Written Answers. - UN Nuclear Disarmament Week.

347.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the proposals the Government have to mark the week of October 24-31, 1983, which has been designated United Nations Nuclear Disarmament Week.

United Nations Disarmament Week, which is also the week which marks the founding of the United Nations, was established in 1978 by the First Special Session of the General Assembly on Disarmament with the intention that it be devoted to fostering a greater public awareness of the dangers of the arms race and to promote a constructive and balanced debate on all aspects of disarmament.

To coincide with the dates concerned, my Department will arrange for the widest possible distribution of available UN publications and fact sheets relating to disarmament, as it has in previous years since Disarmament Week was first established. My Department are also arranging for the issue of a postmark cancellation with a slogan marking the week in question.
