Vol. 345 No. 11

Written Answers. - Slot Machines Legislation.

521.

asked the Minister for Justice if legal restraints on slot-machines which were introduced in 1956 have become largely irrelevant due to the new types of machines invented since then; and if he will consider up-dating the 1956 legislation to take account of the new type of machine in view of the harmful effects they have on the youth of the country.

Limerick East): Various proposals to amend the Gaming and Lotteries Acts, 1956 to 1979, have been made from time to time and, while I will consider all such proposals when pressure of urgent business permits, I cannot say, in reply to a parliamentary question, whether it is likely that any amendment of the Acts will be proposed by me. Legislation promoted by a member of the Government requires Government approval. When Government approval is given for an announcement about legislation to be made, it is made without delay in the normal course.

I will take note of the Deputy's views in regard to the harmful effects of some types of slot machine on the youth of the country.
