Vol. 346 No. 3

Written Answers. - Population Statistics.

285.

asked the Taoiseach (a) the number of married women aged 60 years and over working in the State on 1 November, 1983, (b) working in semi-State bodies, (c) working in private enterprise and (d) the number of married women in the State under 60 years of age working in private enterprise.

The latest information available relates to the 1981 Census of Population. Estimates based on an analysis of a five per cent sample of the census returns indicate that in April 1981 there were some 106,600 married women at work of whom 4,500 were aged 60 years or more and 102,100 were under 60 years of age. A subdivision by private enterprise, semi-State bodies and so on is not available.

286.

asked the Taoiseach the number of people (a) 60 years of age and over and (b) 25 years of age and under on the live register and unemployed on 1 November, 1983 and who took up employment in the State during 1983.

The most recent information available for persons aged 60 to 64 years on the live register is based on the special quarterly age analysis of the live register for 22 July 1983 when there were 9,674 such persons. The same analysis indicated that there were some 59,775 persons under 25 years of age on the live register at the same time. The regular monthly live register statement contains information in respect of persons under 25 years of age, and there were 60,297 such persons on the live register on 28 October 1983.

Particulars of the number who took up employment in the State during 1983 are not available.

287.

asked the Taoiseach the number of people, 60 years of age and over, who are permanently employed in (a) the public service, (b) semi-state bodies and (c) all other companies in the State.

288.

asked the Taoiseach the number of people, 60 years of age and over, in the State who are self employed; the number of people 25 years of age and under, permanently employed in (a) the public service, (b) semi-state bodies and (c) all other companies in the State; and the number of people 25 years of age and under in the State who are self-employed.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 287 and 288 together. The latest information available relates to the 1981 Census of Population. Estimates based on an analysis of a 5 per cent sample of the census returns indicate that in April 1981 there were some 108,600 persons aged 60 years and over and 316,100 under 25 years of age at work in the State. A subdivision by public service, semi-state bodies etc., is not available.

When the final results of the 1981 census become available, a breakdown of the number of persons self-employed by age-group will also be available.
