Vol. 346 No. 3

Written Answers. - Galway Sewerage Pumping Station.

302.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the strong objections by Claddagh residents association, County Galway, to the proposed location of the sewerage pumping station at South Park, Galway city; the action he will take to have this pump house relocated; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There has been a sewerage pumping plant at South Park since the sixties. Preliminary proposals for erecting additional pumping and maceration facilities at South Park were first drawn up in 1971. These proposals have now progressed to the point where loans and tenders have been sanctioned for the additional facilities together with a longer outfall extending into the sea beyond Mutton Island. Representations about the siting of the South Park pumping station have been received by my Department within the last month or so; previous representations sought to have the execution of the South Park project expedited.

I understand that it would not be legally or technically feasible to relocate the South Park pumping station at this stage. I am, however, assured that the additional pumping station superstructure will be attractive in appearance; that there should be no odour nuisance from the sewerage effluent; and, that the Institute of Industrial Research and Standards have advised that noise from the operation of plant at the pumping station will be within acceptable limits.
