asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the concern of many parents in relation to the lack of control on the distribution of video films and the easy availability on video of many films which have been banned by the Censor of Films and if he will make a statement on the action he proposes to take to control the situation.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the uncontrolled sale or hire of video nasties to minors in this country; if he will outline the action he proposes to take in relation to such sales in the light of the recent report on this matter in Britain where it was stated that 40 per cent of children over the age of six years have seen a video nasty; and if he will conduct a survey to ascertain the extent of the problem in Ireland.

I appreciate the concern which has been expressed on this matter both here and in many other countries.
I am having the adequacy of the law for the control of such video films examined as a matter of urgency so that decisions can be taken on new legislation or administrative measures to be taken to deal with the problem.
I should mention that recently there have been some convictions for the display of uncensored video films in public places. I am also aware that the customs authorities have succeeded in preventing a considerable number of objectionable video films from being imported into the State.
