Proposals for the establishment of a National Sports Lottery, which have been submitted by Cospóir, The National Sports Council, have received my approval in principle. At present a memorandum is being prepared for submission to the Government seeking approval for the establishment of a National Sports Lottery.
A sports lottery would constitute a valuable source of funding for the sport, recreational and leisure areas including the Arts and would also provide facilities to serve the needs of youth, the unemployed, and in particular, the disadvantaged. I am advised that when in full operation a net income of the order of £8 million per annum would be realised from the lottery.
