Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Toxic Waste Disposal.

343.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of all surveys carried out in areas for the development of the proposed storage depot for toxic waste.

344.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to apply for planning permission for the proposed storage depot for toxic waste; and, if so, when the plans will be available.

345.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reasons Baldonnel, County Dublin, was chosen as the site for the proposed storage depot for toxic waste.

346.

asked the Minister for the Environment the up-to-date position regarding the proposed storage depot for toxic waste; and if he intends to proceed with this development.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 342 to 346, inclusive, together.

The proposal to provide a central waste facility was the outcome of special consideration in my Department (with the assistance of an expert group representing the IDA, the IIRS and the Geological Survey Office) of the problems of ensuring that suitable provision was made to meet the need for industrial waste disposal facilities. A number of possible sites were considered but it would be inappropriate to give details of the properties concerned.

I understand that the criteria fulfilled by the Baldonnel site were its location near Dublin where a large proportion of industrial waste arises, its ready access to Dublin port, and its relative remoteness from residential development.

As mentioned in reply to recent questions, the arrangements generally relating to the development of the proposed centre, including its possible cost, have been under review. A report from Danish consultants has just been received and is being examined in my Department. Pending completion of this examination and of the review already referred to, I cannot say when detailed proposals relating to the development and operation of the facility will be available. It is, of course, envisaged that the development would be subject to planning permission.
