Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Employment Incentive Scheme.

150.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of hoteliers who participated in the employment incentive scheme in 1983; the number employed under the scheme in the hotel industry; the cost involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In 1983, up to 14 December, 145 employers in the hotel and catering sector, of whom 79 were hoteliers, participated in the employment incentive scheme.

The 145 employers were paid premiums in respect of 963 workers and the 79 hoteliers were paid premiums in respect of 663 workers. The Exchequer costs involved were £491,870 and £318,255 respectively. Premiums paid in respect of workers under 25 years of age attract aid from the European Social Fund.

The purpose of the employment incentive scheme is to encourage employers, by means of a wage subsidy, to increase their employment levels above those at a specified date by taking on unemployed workers.
