Vol. 347 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Wages and Salaries.

566.

asked the Minister for Justice the average wage/salary paid to members of the Garda Síochána in 1983 at the following levels of rank: (a) Garda (b) Sergeant (c) Inspector (d) Superintendent (e) Chief Superintendent (f) Assistant Commissioner (g) Deputy Commissioner and (h) Commissioner; if additional allowances are payable to any of these ranks; and, if so, the amount.

Limerick East): The average pay in 1983 for each rank of the Garda Síochána, including overtime and unsocial hours payments for which members of the garda, sergeant and inspector ranks are eligible, is calculated as follows: Garda, £11,330; Sergeant, £14,100; Inspector, £15,360; Superintendent, £16,400; Chief Superintendent, £20,320; Assistant Commissioner (including Surgeon), £23,460; Deputy Commissioner, £24,470; Commissioner, £30,180.

In addition, rent allowance is payable to members up to and including Chief Superintendent rank. Boot allowance is payable to the garda, sergeant and inspector ranks and uniform maintenance allowance is payable to all members of the Force. Other allowances are paid in respect of special duties or in recoupment of expenses. In this connection, I would refer the Deputy to the State Directory which is published annually and which is available in the Library. This publication contains some further details of allowances payable.

The total amount paid by way of allowances in 1983 was £15.3 million.
