Vol. 347 No. 1

Written Answers. - Border Bridge Repairs.

205.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his Department have any proposals to repair bridges on the Border with Northern Ireland which were damaged as a result of actions by the British security forces and in respect of which a claim has been made to the British Government.

The repair and reopening of cross-Border bridges requires the agreement of the British authorities who closed them for security reasons. In contacts with the British authorities, I and my Department have frequently expressed the Government's concern over closures which cause hardship and inconvenience to local residents in the Border area. I can well understand the frustration felt by local residents with the delay in the reopening of these bridges and I will continue to press the British authorities in the matter.
