Proposals for revision of speed limits are dealt with in the context of periodic overall reviews of speed limits in the county/county borough concerned. In the case of Limerick city and county, proposals for revisions and additions to the limits prescribed in the Road Traffic (Speed Limits) (County Borough of Limerick and County of Limerick) Regulations, 1977 were submitted by Limerick County Council to my Department on 10 February 1982. The proposals involve revisions to speed limits in the city and in 18 areas in the county as well as the introduction of speed limits in a further 15 areas in the county.
Following consultation between the Department and the local authority revised proposals for certain areas were submitted by the council to the Department on 30 November 1983, together with further proposals for an additional speed limit area and an extension to speed limits in three further areas in the county.
Draft regulations to give effect to revised speed limits for Limerick city and county are now being prepared in the Department. Subject to clarification of a few minor points, it is expected that the regulations will be brought into effect within about two months.
