Vol. 347 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

418.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the serious level of concern among the teachers, parents and leaving certificate students at the enormously high failure rate in the subject of Economic History in the leaving certificate examination in June, 1982; the percentage failure rate in this subject; if she will reconsider certain aspects of this programme and the criteria for grading students' results in this subject; and if she will make a statment on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to similar Question No. 112 on Wednesday, 14 December 1983.

The percentage of candidates who were awarded grade E or lower in economic history in 1983 was 75 per cent.

The results in this subject in the 1983 examination will be brought to the attention of the syllabus committee.

419.

asked the Minister for Education if she will consider delaying the payment of leaving certificate examination fees until nearer examination time as early payment is causing hardship in many cases and especially in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon; and the reason for early payment.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 118 of 14 December 1983 in which I pointed out that the time schedule for the preparation of the various stages of the certificate examinations requires that the entry forms and the accompanying fees be received by the beginning of December.
