Vol. 347 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limits.

6.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will raise the speed limits on our national primary roads; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It would be impracticable to apply general speed limits differentiated simply on the basis of road classifications. The present general overall speed limit of 55 m.p.h. is, however, being reviewed by my Department in conjunction with An Foras Forbartha. This review is taking into account such questions as to whether or not the former 60 m.p.h. limit, which was reduced to 55 m.p.h. in 1979, as part of an energy conservation package, should be restored.
