Vol. 347 No. 3

Written Answers. - PRSI Contributions.

362.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the amount of money collected through PRSI contributions in 1983; the amount outstanding and from whom at the end of 1983.

The gross PRSI collected in 1983 in respect of social insurance, occupational injuries insurance, redundancy, youth employment levy, income levy and health contributions amounted to £949.2 million.

It is understood from the Revenue Commissioners that it is not possible to quantify PRSI outstanding from employers registered for PAYE and PRSI at the end of 1983 as balances due are not highlighted until the employers submit their end-of-year returns in April. The latest available figures of PRSI outstanding by registered employers were published in paragraph 13 of the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the 1982 Appropriation Accounts and showed £37 million outstanding in respect of PRSI as at 31 May 1983 for years up to and including 1981-82. Corresponding figures for 1982-83 will be determined during the course of the year and will be available for publication in the Appropriation Account for 1983.

It is understood from the Revenue Commissioners that they are precluded from identifying employers who may be in default.
