Vol. 347 No. 6

Written Answers. - Nicaraguan Diplomatic Ties.

192.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware of representations made to him by the Nicaraguan Government seeking diplomatic or consular ties with Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter outlining the history of any such contracts.

From time to time confidential approaches and contacts are made between this and other countries concerning the establishment of diplomatic relations. It would be inappropriate and contrary to international practice to make public any information on such approaches or contacts since these concern only the Government of Ireland and the other governments concerned.

On the question of the establishment of consular relations there is no record of such a request having been made to my Department in recent years.
