Vol. 347 No. 6

Written Answers. - Local Authority Snow Clearance.

211.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for the Environment the source from which money was provided for snow clearance carried out by local authorities.

The question of financing the cost of snow clearance by a local authority is primarily a matter for the local authority concerned. In the case of roads, the cost is generally met from the local authority's own resources, supplemented by the block grant or by my Department's grants for maintenance. In 1983 the Department provided additional grants totalling £253,000 to meet the cost of specialist snow-clearing equipment in certain key areas. In 1984 I propose to make a provision of the same order for this purpose.
