The letter in question, which also received some press publicity, consists mainly of unsubstantiated assertions about damage to trees by acid rain. These assertions are not borne out by my Department's recent and on-going investigations. Indeed, all the indications are that the damage complained of arises from sources other than acid rain. The writer is being so informed and is also being advised that the general situation in regard to potential damage to Irish forests by acid rain is being kept under review.
