Vol. 348 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment Delays.

2.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that long delays are being experienced by children who are in need of orthodontic treatment in the Western Health Board area; and if he will investigate the matter with a view to providing increased personnel and better facilities.

I am aware of the delays in providing orthodontic treatment for children in the Western Health Board area at present. However, the filling of a post of consultant orthodontist for the Western Health Board is expected to have a big impact in reducing the waiting time for treatment. The post of consultant orthodontist was among five such posts advertised by the Local Appointments Commission in October 1983 and applications are being processed by the commission at present. If there is a suitable applicant the post in the Western Health Board could be filled very soon.

How many are likely to be appointed as a result of the post being advertised?

The posts were advertised, as I said, in October 1983 and the applications are being processed at present. If a suitable applicant applies for the post in the Western Health Board area I presume he will be appointed.

Could the Minister indicate when it is likely the appointment will take place?

I would say in about three to four months' time.
