Vol. 348 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tullamore (Offaly) Hospital Appointments.

383.

asked the Minister for Health if, in view of his statement in the Dáil during Question Time on 21 February 1984 that the obstetrician/ gynaecologist at present attached to Tullamore general hospital is leaving to take up an appointment in Wexford, he will immediately advertise for the appointment of a replacement obstetrician/ gynaecologist for Tullamore; if so, when this advertisement will be placed; and when the replacement will take up duty.

The Midland Health Board have advertised for a locum obstetrician/ gynaecologist for Tullamore general hospital so as to ensure that the level of service will be maintained pending the making of a permanent appointment. I can assure the Deputy that there will be no avoidable delay in the making of a permanent appointment the procedures for which will involve the Department, Comhairle na nOspidéal and advertising by the Local Appointments Commissioners.

384.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the necessity for the appointment of a paediatrician at the general hospital, Tullamore, County Offaly and the widespread public demand for one; if he will consider favourably the making of such an appointment; and when he intends making such an appointment to Tullamore general hospital.

I am acutely aware of the lack of a proper paediatric service for the Midland Health Board area, including County Offaly. In the current difficult budgetary situation the appointment of consultant paediatricians based in the board's area poses many problems. However in view of the urgency of the situation my Department and the health board are at present considering various proposals for the development of an adequate service.
