Vol. 348 No. 13

Written Answers. - Transfer of Prisoners.

394.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prisoners who were recently transferred from Mountjoy Prison to Limerick Prison; the reason they were transferred; the work, education and recreation facilities that are available to them in Limerick; if the Government will provide vouchers for their families to visit them as the return fare to Limerick costs £19; if the Department will transfer them back to Mountjoy for visits; the reason they are not detained in the prison nearest their abode; and if he intends to retransfer them to Mountjoy at some future date.

Following a review of security problems at Mountjoy it was decided to transfer 12 high-risk prisoners from Mountjoy to Limerick Prison. The transfer took place on 2 February 1984.

It has not been possible to provide classes for those prisoners yet but classes will be provided at the beginning of the next school term.

A craftshop is available for use by the prisoners with facilities for leather work etc. The provision of other types of work is under consideration. An exercise yard and an exercise room with gym equipment is available.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 380 on 23 March 1983, which sets out the position regarding financial assistance to enable their families to visit prisoners.

An application by any of the prisoners for retransfer to Mountjoy Prison will be considered but security needs together with pressure on accommodation, will have to be borne in mind in considering any such application.
