Vol. 349 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fishing Vessels Regulations.

478.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware that many of the UK registered Spanish vessels, which are now fishing from Irish ports, or in waters under Irish jurisdiction, do not comply with gear and crewing requirements; and if he will ensure that regular and thorough checks are carried out on these vessels to ensure their compliance with full regulations.

Since the introduction last year of crewing regulations which were designed to prevent vessels operating under flags of convenience from fishing in Irish waters, a number of ex-Spanish vessels registered in the United Kingdom have been arrested and prosecuted for breaches of these regulations.

The Deputy can be assured that regular and thorough checks are made at sea and in port to ensure that such vessels are in compliance with all requirements.
