Vol. 349 No. 7

Written Answers. - Enterprise Allowance Scheme.

475.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of grants made available to date under the enterprise allowance scheme to persons setting up business in motorcycle service; and in the event of such grants being made available, if he has considered the serious drop in business with existing registered motorcycle repair shops and the fact that a number of these businesses had to close due to the recession which has affected sales and service.

The enterprise allowance scheme provides for the establishment of enterprises in any sector of economic activity other than gaming or the promotion of political or religious views. The allowance payable is conditional on the participant having been in receipt of unemployment payments or training allowances.

To date, five persons setting up enterprises in the motorcycle sales/repairs /service area have been admitted to the scheme. These enterprises are situated throughout the country.

The operation of the enterprise allowance scheme will be reviewed in due course. The possible displacement effects of the establishment of enterprises under the scheme will be taken into account in this review.
