Vol. 350 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soapstone Deposits.

11.

asked the Minister for Energy the proposals there are for the production of the soapstone deposits discovered in recent years near Westport, County Mayo, and on Inishbofin, County Galway.

While soapstone deposits have been outlined at Westport and Inishbofin the question of developing them is still being studied by the company concerned. Pending the outcome of these studies it is not possible to say whether or nor the deposits will be developed. The company is aware of my wish that their investigations should be brought to a conclusion as soon as possible.

Is the Minister aware that there is a reasonably substantial usage of this product in this country at present, that it is all imported and that it would be in our national interest as well as in the interests of the two localities I mention that these deposits should be brought into production at the earliest possible opportunity?

Yes, I am aware of the fact that it would be beneficial and in everybody's interest if we could have exploration of soapstone. My Department have had discussions with the company in question. The company have agreed to forward us the results of further drilling and of marketing research they are at present undertaking. As soon as this is to hand I can assure the Deputy there will not be any delay on my part in arriving at decisions.
