Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 29 May 1984

Vol. 350 No. 12

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 2, 3, 1 and 11. Private Members' Business will be No. 62.

I would like to direct your attention to the fact that this party have put down a motion as follows:

That Dáil Éireann declares that in view of the revelation that the 1984 budget was falsely based it no longer has confidence in the Minister for Finance.

That motion is in my name and a number of my colleagues.

I would like to tell the Leader of the Opposition that I will certainly allow him to ask one short question on that matter and I will allow one short answer on it.

I would like to ask the Taoiseach if he will give time this afternoon or tomorrow for a discussion on that motion. I believe we are in accordance with precedent in seeking to have priority awarded to it.

I am concerned that the matters which have been referred to in respect to our statistics should have the opportunity of being aired in the House as soon as possible. I propose to offer to the Opposition the opportunity of doing so on Thursday morning, possibly for three hours, from 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., in order to have an open discussion on the subject. It is important that the House and the public should be fully informed because some of the statements made on behalf of the Fianna Fáil Party have been quite extraordinarily misleading in this instance. It is important to get the record put straight as soon as possible.

May I inform the Taoiseach that the House is not sitting on Thursday. The matter should be cleared up as a matter of urgency. If he wants that done we should have the debate tomorrow.

There is business arranged for tomorrow. I am proposing to facilitate the Deputy by arranging a special sitting on Thursday morning for three hours.

That is typical sharp practice by the Taoiseach. The House is sitting today and tomorrow. The Taoiseach suggested that this matter should be cleared up immediately. We are asking specifically for Government time this afternoon or tomorrow. Would the Taoiseach please not try this little sleight of hand of offering a special debate on Thursday? Tomorrow is the day to discuss it.

(Interruptions.)

The Deputy will have to get used to being on the other side of the House. The Government order the business. I am prepared to order business for Thursday to enable this to be discussed. We have business ordered for tomorrow.

The Taoiseach is afraid of it.
