Vol. 351 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Reclassification.

56.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he proposes to reclassify public roads.

The present national road system, primary and secondary, is now generally regarded as established, having been formally declared in 1977, following a long process of evaluation and consultation. Marginal changes only may be appropriate for the foreseeable future. A reclassification of the most important of the non-national roads into a new system of regional roads was carried out in a preliminary way by my Department in 1981 and the question of putting this on a more formal basis is being considered.
