Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Corporation Lay-offs.

366.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will adopt the proposal to his Department by the Irish Municipal Employees Trade Union arising out of a decision of the Dublin Corporation environmental works section to lay off a large number of the workforce, that he should bring together all interested parties to consider first how to ensure the continued employment of all those in the environmental works section; and if he will agree to the long-term financial arrangements of the section, thereby ending the uncertainty of the periodic rescue operations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I met representatives of the Irish Municipal Employees Trade Union and the other trade unions involved last week and explained to them that the continued employment of men in the environmental works section of Dublin Corporation is a matter for the corporation. As to the financial arrangements, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 7 to 11, inclusive, on 13 June, 1984.

I would stress again my concern that every effort should be made to resolve the problem of the workers' future as smoothly as possible and I have conveyed this concern to the corporation.
