Vol. 352 No. 8

Written Answers. - Meat Factories.

698.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the total number of meat factories in the country; their locations; the total amount of sheep, cattle or pigs slaughtered in these factories over the past year; the value of these slaughterings in each category; the total amount of people employed in each factory at each location; and if he will make a statement on these matters.

My Department licenses meat export plants only. The total number so registered is 50.

They are located as follows: Leinster, 16; Munster, 18; Ulster, 7; Connaught, 9.

The total numbers of sheep, cattle and pigs slaughtered in these factories in 1983 were: sheep, 812,147; cattle, 979,237; pigs, 2,227,611.

I have no information as to the value of these slaughterings or the total number of people employed in each factory.
