asked the Minister for Health in respect of each year from 1978 to 1983 (a) the number of applications received by the Registrar General from divorced persons for permission to remarry within the jurisdiction; (b) the number of such applications refused and (c) the grounds for refusal in each case.

The following table shows for each of the years 1978 to 1983: (a) the number of applications for marrige licence or certificate which were made by divorced persons and which were referred to An tArd-Chláraitheoir and (b) the number of such applications in which An tArd-Chláraitheoir advised that the proposed marriage should not proceed.

For reasons of confidentiality, it is not appropriate to give specific information relating to individual cases. In general, however, the reason why An tArd-Chláraitheoir advised that the proposed marriage should not proceed was the failure of the parties concerned to show, due mainly to questions relating to domicile, that the relevant divorce decree would be recognised under Irish law.
