Vol. 353 No. 4

Written Answers. - Teacher Training.

649.

asked the Minister for Education if there is a quota of places available in our teacher training colleges for applicants from Gaeltacht areas; and if so, the size of this quota.

In the case of the open competition for the admission of school leavers to the Colleges of Education for primary teachers the published regulations state that up to ten per cent of the vacancies may be reserved for candidates from the Gaeltacht, i.e. candidates, the normal language of whose home is Irish and who qualify for the £10 Gaeltacht grant.

In the case of Colleges of Home Economics a maximum of four places is reserved for competition amongst candidates who have been resident in the Gaeltacht for most of their life and the normal language of whose home is Irish and who reach the appropriate standard in the entrance competitions.
