Vol. 353 No. 4

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

662.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for Education the reason higher education grants are not payable to students undertaking courses incorporating theology; and whether she has any proposals to change this regulation.

Since the introduction of the higher education grants scheme in 1968, non-secular courses, i.e. those which in content and character are essentially courses in religious studies, have not been accepted for purposes of the grants scheme. I have at present under consideration the whole question of theology/divinity courses in third-level institutions and I will make a statement in the matter in due course.
