Vol. 353 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driving Licences and Car Taxation.

556.

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the fact that the public are reminded to pay their driving licences but not car taxation, if he will consider amalgamating to eliminate duplication; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The driver licensing system is not associated with vehicle ownership because a substantial number of driving licence holders are not the registered owners of the vehicles they drive. In any event, the periods covered by driving licences generally differ significantly from those relating to motor vehicle licences.

As a consequence of the computerisation of records of motor vehicle licence records, my Department is developing a system for the issue of notices to registered owners of motor vehicles where licences have not been renewed.
