Vol. 354 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hospital Computer Systems.

620.

asked the Minister for Health the hospital locations at which the McAuto systems are in operation at present; if he is satisfied with this particular system; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The McAuto hospital data communications plus system is being implemented in three sites at present — Cork Regional Hospital, Tralee General Hospital and Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. A contract has recently been signed between McAuto and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

As these implementations began this year and the system is installed on a modular basis, it has not been possible to carry out a full assessment of the system. Appropriate modifications to the system have been specified and are being carried out by McAuto at no extra cost to the health sector or the Department of Health.

It will be some months yet before the system can be fully evaluated. I am satisfied that the arrangements which have been established for the implementation and adaptation of the system will produce a satisfactory outcome.

621.

asked the Minister for Health the extent of the contractual commitment with McAuto computers systems in terms of software and finance; and the amount they have been paid to date.

McAuto were selected as suppliers of standard software for patient administration and pharmacy systems for Irish hospitals.

The contractual arrangements are a matter between individual hospitals or health boards and McAuto, as appropriate. To date McAuto have been paid £2.2 million of which £1.5 million was in respect of equipment supplied by Digital Equipment Corporation.
