Vol. 354 No. 10

Written Answers. - Restoration of Dublin Castle.

194.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed to spend £17 million on the restoration of Dublin Castle and on the provision of a major conference centre within it in preparation for Ireland's next presidency of the EC in 1990 as recently reported and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the agreement, in principle, of the Government, the Office of Public Works is planning major restoration works for Dublin Castle. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, refurbishment works have previously been carried out in the State Apartments and in the east crossblock and the present plans are a logical continuation of there works. The plans include provision of a conference hall to meet the needs of an expanded EC in 1990 and future presidencies. When completed the scheme will not only provide much needed accommodation to meet the State's obligations in regard to the EC Presidency requirements, but will also ensure the survival of a major landmark of our heritage in historical, social and architectural terms.

It is not possible at this stage to give an accurate estimate of cost for the scheme.

As well as a conference hall and ancillary accommodation, the proposed scheme will provide some office space together with improved facilities for the State Apartments.
