Vol. 354 No. 10

Written Answers. - Register of Electors.

607.

asked the Minister for the Environment the action he intends taking to implement the report of the working party on the Register of Electors published in March, 1983.

The report of the working party which was published in March 1983, and debated in this House on 21 April 1983 contained recommendations on: postal voting, access to polling stations by the disabled, and measures to improve the register of electors. In regard to postal voting, proposals based on the working party's recommendations were considered by the Joint Committee on Legislation and the preparation of legislation to give effect to these proposals is in hand.

On the question of access to polling stations by disabled electors, recommendations which could be implemented administratively have been acted on. The remaining recommendations including those involving substantial changes in the processes relating to preparation and publication of the register, the time-scale for such preparation and the method of compilation are being considered in consultation with the registration authorities and county registrars.
