Vol. 355 No. 1

Written Answers. - Education of Mentally Handicapped.

601.

asked the Minister for Education the curriculum planning which has been done in respect of post-primary education for mentally handicapped children; and the groupings involved in such planning.

As stated in the Programme for Action in Education 1984-1987, it is envisaged that the mildly mentally handicapped will share much of the school's activities with other pupils, but that special provision will be prepared for them by way of an appropriate curriculum.

The planning of this special curricular provision is being undertaken by a special committee set up within the Department for that purpose. The committee comprises Department inspectors from the primary, post primary, special education and psychological service areas.
