Vol. 355 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

607.

asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of the total number of applications received for fare-paying school transport facilities annually over the past two years; the total number sanctioned; the amount of money received annually under this system; and if she will make a statement on this aspect of school transport.

Details of the total number of pupils who applied for school transport facilities whether fare-paying or otherwise in 1983 and 1984 are not available.

The number of pupils who paid charges and the total amount collected in school transport charges in each of the two years 1983 and 1984 were as follows:

Year

Total pupils paying charges

Total receipts

1983

57,470

£2,253,000

1984

59,520

£2,440,000

Continued contributions from eligible post primary pupils are necessary to maintain the existing range of school transport services. Concessionary fare-paying facilities on special school services will continue to be granted to ineligible pupils were accommodation is available.
