Vol. 355 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Signposting.

306.

Mr. N. Andrews

andMr. D. Andrews asked the Minister for the environment the plans he has to improve direction signposting and area and district name placing throughout the country.

Regarding directional traffic signs this is a function of the road authorities. There is an on-going programme, financed with 100 per cent State grants, for the provision of improved signs of this nature on the national roads. This programme will continue until all national roads are adequately signposted. In the case of roads other than national roads, it is a matter for each road authority to decide the priority to be given to signposting and to provide the necessary finance from their own resources (including the rate support grant), supplemented by the annual block grant provided by the Department.

In a memorandum which was issued yesterday to road authorities in connection with road grant allocations for 1985, road authorities were reminded of the need to rectify any deficiencies in signposting. The provision of street name plates is entirely a matter for the local authority concerned.
