Vol. 355 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electronic and Computer Industries.

7.

asked the Taoiseach the proportion of total industrial exports for 1984 accounted for by the electronic and computer industries.

(Dún Laoghaire): Provisional figures for the period January-October 1984, the latest period for which information is available, show that exports classified to divisions 75 and 76 of the standard international trade clasification, which comprise office machines, data processing equipment, telecommunications equipment and sound recording and reproducing equipment, accounted for 22.7 per cent of exports of all industrial produce.

I welcome this investment and development. I should like to ask the Minister of State if he is aware of the trend that this is now forming a hard core of our total manufacturing sector? Is the Minister of State looking at the possibility of diversifying the nature of our dependence on this area?

That is a matter for another Minister.

Will the Minister indicate the countries to which these goods are exported?

(Dún Laoghaire): I do not have that information but if the Deputy tables a question I will get it for him.

Are there any restrictions on the countries to which this country may export electronic equipment?

That is a matter for another Minister. The Minister of State does not have control over that area.

I take it that the answer is "yes".
