Vol. 355 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bread Subsidies.

248.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the cost to the Exchequer of bread subsidies in 1985 compared with their cost if no decision had been taken to reduce them last July.

A provision of £19.5 million has been made in the Estimates for 1985 in respect of the consumer subsidy on standard bread. It is estimated that the cost to the Exchequer in 1985 would be £40.5 million had a decision not been taken to reduce the subsidy with effect from 5 August 1984.
