A provision of £19.5 million has been made in the Estimates for 1985 in respect of the consumer subsidy on standard bread. It is estimated that the cost to the Exchequer in 1985 would be £40.5 million had a decision not been taken to reduce the subsidy with effect from 5 August 1984.
