asked the Minister for Education the total amount paid in equipment grants for primary schools during (a) 1983, (b) 1984, and (c) the estimated amount to be paid during 1985.

Grants may be paid towards the cost of providing (a) audio-visual teaching equipment and (b) in the case of a new school or school which has been considerably enlarged or structurally improved a stock of school requisites.

The total grants paid under (a) and (b) were:

The provision made in the 1985 Estimates is £27,000 under (a) and £10,000 under (b) above.

Grants to national schools in respect of other equipment, including physical education equipment, are paid by the Commissioners of Public Works, who have been asked to supply such information as may be available from their records. I shall write to the Deputy as soon as I hear from the Commissioners.

It is also open to boards of management to purchase items of equipment from the school capitation grant income. Details of such expenditure are not available to my Department.
