Vol. 355 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cork Job Losses.

408.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of job losses in the Cork area for the years 1981, 1982 and 1983; and the number of new jobs created for the same period.

The information sought in relation to Cork is not available to me. However, I am informed that details on a regional basis of the net change in total employment, job gains and losses and first time jobs created by the IDA in the manufacturing sector are contained in the annual reports of the IDA since 1981. The figures contained in the annual reports are based on the IDA's annual employment survey which is conducted primarily to facilitate planning requirements within the IDA.

The only information on job losses available in my Department relates to redundancies notified under the redundancy payments scheme. These statistics, however, are not broken down into geographical areas, but are compiled on a countrywide basis and categorised by industrial sector and sex. I regret that it would not be practicable to extract statistics relating to particular areas, such as Cork.
