Estimates of the labour force are compiled annually in respect of mid-April and are based on the sample labour force surveys. The numbers unemployed at mid-April 1982 and 1983, the latest period for which the information is available, were 148,000 and 184,000 respectively. These figures include an estimated 25,000 and 29,000 first job seekers respectively. The estimates for 1984 are expected to be available in a few months.
