asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of persons from his Department who are currently on (a) paid educational leave and (b) unpaid educational leave; the nature of educational courses being pursued and the cost to the State in monetary terms and in services lost by such absences; and the average number of such absences and average cost to the State for the year 1984.

Three officers from my Department, including two on part time release, are currently on paid educational leave and three officers are on unpaid educational leave. The nature of the educational courses being pursued by the officers in question and the other information requested by the Deputy are as follows:

A total of nine officers were on educational leave in 1984 at an average cost to the State of £2,500 per officer.

The information provided excludes officers (1) pursuing educational courses in their own time who obtained short periods of study and examination leave (2) awarded Gaeltacht scholarships by Gaeleagras na Seirbhise Poibli and (3) pursuing educational courses while on career breaks.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the number of persons from his Department who are currently on (a) paid educational leave, (b) unpaid educational leave, the nature of educational courses being pursued and the cost to the State in monetary terms and in services lost by such absences; and the average number of such absences and the average cost to the State for the year 1984.

(a) Two officers are on paid educational leave, one taking B Sc (Public Administration) degree and the other taking Masters Degree in Environmental Science; (b) Five officers are on unpaid special leave pursuing the following courses: Ph D (Forestry), Master of Philosophy in History, Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science.

The approximate total cost of (a) to date is £34,500 including £18,000 for 1984; There are no costs under (b). Some work on wildlife research has had to be deferred otherwise no services have been adversely affected.
