I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer re-commenced employment on 24 May 1984, having been unemployed since July 1983. He submitted a return of income to the inspector which indicated that his taxable income for 1984-85 would, taking into account the appropriate table allowance, be taxable at the rate of 45 per cent and a tax-free allowance certificate on that basis was issued to him on 11 June 1984. However, information recently furnished by the employer indicates that the taxpayer's earnings in the current year are considerably in excess of the figure originally supplied by him and, consequently, tax has been correctly deducted from his taxable earnings at the higher rates of 45, 55 and 60 per cent, as appropriate.
