Vol. 355 No. 10

Written Answers. - Illegal Money Lenders.

640.

asked the Minister for Justice if the Garda authorities have received any reports of increased activity by illegal money lenders; if these reports are being investigated; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

641.

asked the Minister for Justice if the Garda authorities are aware of reports of increased activity by illegal money lenders in Galway city; if these reports have been investigated; the outcome of any such investigations; and if he will make a statment on the matter.

, Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 640 and 641 together.

The Garda authorities have informed me that no complaints of illegal moneylending have been made to them and that consequently they are not aware of any general increase in this activity. As regards the position in Galway, the Garda are aware of allegations of such activity in this area and certain inquiries have been made but, so far, they have been unable to obtain any concrete evidence of such activity. It will be appreciated that if people are unwilling to make evidence available there is very little the Garda can do about the matter.

As I stated in reply to Parliamentary Question No. 485 of 29 November 1984, if evidence of illegal moneylending is brought to their attention the Garda will take appropriate action including, if the evidence is sufficient, criminal proceedings.
